Trainer Travel Tips

July 27, 2015

Turns out, some of the tricks I have in my gym bag have also helped me become a more savvy traveler. Here are a few of my favorite items to help you get from here-to-there and through your summer trips fast, fresh, and fit…

Laces Out: Whether I’m running through security at LAX or just trying to get from my dog walk to the Pilates studio, easy on-and-off sneakers make life more convenient. Introducing brilliant Hickies! This stylish lacing system comes in a bunch of different colors, fits almost any laced up shoe, and now all of my Nikes are decked in gold, black or grey. And while you might need to buy new kicks every so often, your Hickies can transfer from pair to pair. Because seriously, who has time for bows?

Hell No Cardio: I definitely don’t “work out” like usual when I’m on vacation or traveling, and tend to stick to social exercises such as walking along the beach, or swimming to the Mai Tai at the pool bar. BUT I do always bring my Theraband so that I can get everything from resistance workouts, stretches, and physical therapy moves done without ever leaving the cabana. Not sure what moves to do? There are endless YouTube tutorials, but be sure to check with your doctor first, especially if you have any injuries. Remember, a little bit of physical maintenance can go a long way in making you feel more active on your trips, and less sluggish returning home. Imagine…Is that a tan and more toned arms? And you were hardly even trying…

Not Those Blue Balls: I have said many times that my foam roller is the first thing I’d save in a fire, so needless to say, anytime I travel I shed a tear for my muscle busting best friend left behind. Well, thanks to the Rad Roller I cry no more! It’s small enough I can keep it tucked in my purse, but strong and precise enough to help roll out tight muscles from cramped coach seats and more. Arms, legs, back and neck can all get a good massage no matter where you are, and that is definitely rad.

From Nuun To Midnight: Dehydration can lead to nausea, fatigue, dizziness, irritability and overall turn you into a no-fun travel companion. Make your water work harder for you by adding in a Nuun tab! Electrolytes, 17 vitamins and minerals, under 8 calories, no added sugar and a bunch of flavors, these effervescent wonders help keep you in adventure mode all day long. Pop one in your reusable water bottle and hit the road.

Not So Fresh & So Clean: Flight delays, all day travel, and you’re feeling like a greasy dirt pile with no shower in sight? Been there. Enter my secret weapon for convincing people I’m clean with good hygiene, Alterna Cleanse Extend Dry Shampoo! Spray a little in your roots and BAM! Instant lift, nice scent, impurities and oil are evaporated all while being paraben, sulfate and basically garbage free. I use a curling wand to add a little finishing touch, and love V. Swish Hot Mats so you can instantly unplug that hot iron (up to 480 degrees), wrap it, and go without waiting for cool down. Was that final boarding call? Couldn’t hear the announcement over this hair volume…

Now get out, get adventurous, and let the wanderlust take over! Ready for take off…

Lay back and smell the sun
Warm up the Georgia pine
Feels so good to be taking it easy
Why would I ever leave?
‘Cause I know

I got some good friends that live down the street
Got a good looking woman with her arms ‘round me
Here in a small town where it feels like home
I got everything I need and nothing that I don’t
Homegrown, Homegrown”

Zac Brown Band

Sunshine, live music and great friends added up to a killer weekend! Meegan and Curtis are our friends who as the lyrics say, “that live down the street” literally! Last time I went to the Gorge Amphitheater I was 18 years old and wanted to be as close to the stage as possible. It’s funny how things change and now I’d rather sit comfortably on the grass than fight my way through a crowd. It was doubly confirmed I’m at a new stage in life as we drove past the “Standard Campground” at the Gorge and arrived at the “Terrace Campground”. We got out of our truck and introduced ourselves to our neighbors, one gal said, “You guys are smart to stay here with the old people. The bathrooms alone are worth it.” Old people…yep, I’m one of them. I want a nice bathroom, a view, and a little space from my neighbor…and I’m okay with that.

After successfully getting our tents ready for our return later that evening, we headed down to the concert via shuttle. There was a sea of people wearing red, white and blue and I felt like it was the Fourth of July all over again! Zac Brown Band fans definitely know how to represent the good ol’ U.S. of A. As I gave my ticket to the lady at the gate, she commented how Meegan and I were dressed more for Sasquatch Festival than the present concert, which was funny because I was even wearing cowgirl boots! I tried to embrace the country vibe and apparently I missed the mark.

For most of my life I really didn’t enjoy country music. It was such a part of our small town where I’m from, I wanted to rebel against it. After a little maturity and wisdom, I actually really enjoy country music now and had a blast at my first country concert. They covered songs from the Beatles to Metallica during their set and took some serious liberty with their extended guitar solos. Dancing and singing filled the amphitheater to our delight and I’m already pondering maybe going back to the Gorge to see the Foo Fighters in September. It was an awesome experience overall and next time I might try staying at Cave B Estate Winery (they have desert yurts!). Unfortunately, they were all booked for this event.

Waiting in line to catch the return shuttle after the concert, we chatted with a couple from L.A. who fulfilled a bucket list check off by attending the concert at the Gorge. It’s pretty exciting to know to we have such a desirable destination just 3.5 hours drive from us. Whether you live near or far, I recommend at least going once and experiencing the views and music for a crazy, fun night!
